Here is a sentence you will not hear at an AI conference: outside the tech sector, artificial intelligence has so far delivered zero measurable financial payoff to corporate America.
That is not a blogger's opinion. It is the conclusion of Torsten Slok, chief economist at Apollo Global Management, in a widely discussed analysis published on October 24. And buried inside the sobering data is genuinely good news for Indian small and medium businesses - if you read it the right way.
What the data actually shows
Slok's team compared the Magnificent 7 tech giants against the other 493 companies in the S&P 500:
- Revenue per worker is rising for the Mag 7 but flat for the S&P 493.
- Profit margins are rising for the Mag 7 but flat for the S&P 493.
- Economy-wide productivity data shows no AI-driven acceleration, despite two years of massive investment.
The spending pattern explains a lot. AI token spending is heavily concentrated in a small number of venture-backed firms, which keep buying more AI. Mainstream companies, meanwhile, are starting to treat AI spending as a cost centre that weighs on margins, not a growth engine. Slok's bottom line: "The AI story will be decided in the S&P 493, not the Mag 7" - and so far there is no evidence revenue or margins are improving outside tech.
Why the hype and the data disagree
None of this means AI is useless. It means most companies are buying it wrong. Three patterns show up again and again:
- Buying the frontier when the task is ordinary. Most business tasks - drafting replies, summarising enquiries, tagging support tickets, generating product descriptions - do not need the most expensive model. Apollo notes mainstream firms "do not need the latest model and are unwilling to pay for it." Cheaper models, including the wave of strong open-weight releases this month, handle routine work at a fraction of the price.
- Measuring excitement instead of money. A pilot that impresses the boardroom but touches no revenue line and no cost line will show up exactly as Slok describes: flat.
- Expecting judgment from a calculator. Slok's sharpest point: AI may be a great calculator, but business intelligence is mostly judgment, and judgment depends on context, trust, and accountability. AI assists people who know the business. It does not replace knowing the business.
What actually pays for an Indian SMB
The companies seeing real returns are not doing moonshots. They are doing boring things well, and this is where Indian businesses - leaner budgets, faster decisions - can skip the expensive mistakes American corporates just paid to make:
- Answer every enquiry fast. An AI-assisted first response on your website or WhatsApp, handed to a human within minutes, converts measurably better than a contact form answered tomorrow.
- Let AI do the first draft, not the final word. Product descriptions, social posts, proposal templates - your team edits instead of starting from zero. Hours saved every week, at near-zero model cost.
- Automate the repetitive back office. Invoice reminders, appointment confirmations, review requests. Small automations with clear rupee savings beat grand "AI transformation" decks.
- Fix the unglamorous foundation first. A fast website, clean data, and working analytics return more per rupee than any AI subscription. AI layered on a broken process only produces faster chaos.
Notice what these have in common: each has a number attached before you start - response time, hours saved, reminders sent. If you cannot name the number an AI tool will move, you are buying a demo, not a result.
The takeaway
Apollo's data is not a reason to avoid AI. It is a map of where the value actually is: narrow tasks, cheap models, human judgment in charge, and a metric you check after 90 days. The Mag 7 can afford to burn billions exploring. Your business cannot - and the good news is, it does not need to.
At VAIR IT Technologies, this is exactly how we work with businesses across Noida and Delhi NCR: practical websites, automation, and AI integration scoped to a measurable outcome, not a buzzword.
