Google has started putting ads inside its AI-powered search answers in India. On October 28, the company announced that ads in AI Mode - its conversational search experience - are expanding to ten new countries, and India is on the list. Alongside the announcement, Alphabet's quarterly numbers explained the urgency: Search advertising growth slowed to 12%, down from 19% at the start of the year.
If your business gets customers from Google - through ads or organic rankings - this changes the ground under both. Here is what was announced and what to do about it.
What Google actually announced
From Google's official ads blog and Alphabet's Q3 earnings call:
- Ads in AI Mode are now scaling to India, Australia, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore, with Brazil, Mexico and the UK to follow in Q4 2026.
- Multi-turn ads are launching in the US: ads that can appear in follow-up questions within the same AI conversation, not just the first query.
- AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches, and one in five AI Mode searches globally involves voice, images or documents.
- Ads inside AI answers are labeled "Sponsored," and Google says click-through rates on sponsored product listings in AI Mode are already comparable to organic listings (per its own internal data, so treat that as directional, not gospel).
The business context matters too. Alphabet reported $127.6 billion in quarterly revenue, up 25%, with Cloud up 103%. But Search - the cash engine - grew 12%, decelerating for the third straight quarter, and the stock fell 8% on the results. Google's chief business officer Philipp Schindler told investors the company is "taking our monetization footprint global for the first time." Translation: AI answers are now an ad surface, and India is part of the first wave.
Why this matters for Indian businesses specifically
India is one of Google's largest and most search-dependent markets, and Indian customers were already heavy users of voice and image search - exactly the behaviors AI Mode amplifies. Three practical consequences:
1. The search results page is no longer the only battleground
Customers asking conversational questions ("best steel fabricator near Gurgaon for factory sheds, what should I check?") increasingly get an AI-assembled answer - with ads embedded in it. A business that only optimised for ten blue links will meet fewer customers at the moment of decision.
2. Ad targeting shifts from keywords to intent
Three-times-longer queries carry far more context than "fabricator Gurgaon." Google's pitch is that AI can match that richer intent to advertisers. For businesses running Google Ads, that means campaigns structured around customer problems and questions - not just keyword lists - will fit the new formats better. Expect Google to steer advertisers toward its automated, AI-matched campaign types.
3. Being cited by the AI answer is the new position one
Organic visibility is not dead, but it is changing shape. AI answers draw from pages that clearly and specifically answer questions: detailed service pages, honest pricing information, FAQs written in the language customers actually use. Thin pages built around a single keyword have a shrinking future.
What to do this quarter
- Watch your search mix. If you run Google Ads, ask your agency or check your account for AI Mode / AI Overviews placement reporting as it rolls out in India, and judge it on cost per lead, not novelty.
- Rewrite one service page as answers. Take your most valuable service and structure the page around the five questions customers actually ask, with direct answers. That format serves human readers and AI answers at once.
- Keep the fundamentals. Accurate Google Business Profile, real reviews, fast mobile pages - these feed every surface Google builds, AI or otherwise.
The honest catches
Some perspective before anyone rebuilds their marketing this weekend. First, AI Mode is one search surface among many; classic search still carries the overwhelming share of queries, and Google has every incentive to keep monetising it. Second, the "ads perform like organic" claim is Google's own early data - wait for independent measurement before betting budget on it. Third, ad formats inside AI answers will change repeatedly over the next year; the durable investment is content that genuinely answers customer questions, because every version of search rewards that.
The bottom line
Search advertising is moving into AI answers, and India is in the first group of countries where it happens. The businesses that adapt early - ads structured around intent, pages written as real answers - will meet customers where search is going, not where it was.
